Breaking: Kano Assembly Impeaches Speaker and Two Other Principal Officers

Alhaji Abdullahi Yusuf Ata

The speaker of the Kano state House of Assembly, Alhaji Abdullahi Yusuf Ata, has been impeached. According to reports, the speaker was impeached on Monday, July 30, alongside two other principal officers.  News gathered that the impeachment plan was hatched after the 40-member Assembly resumed from its two-month recess.

The member representing the Warawa Constituency, Labaran Madari, raised the impeachment motion, which was seconded by the lone member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abdullahi Muhammed.

The vote to impeach the speaker was secretly carried out on Sunday night, May 13. A source blamed incompetence as the reason Ata was about to be impeached by other lawmakers. "The reasons are many but the major one is incompetency. The speaker has completely localised the house. We cannot sit until after 2pm and even at that, things are not moving as expected. We cannot just continue like that because we are representing our constituents," the source added.

Benue Assembly - Eight (8) APC Lawmakers set to Impeach Gov. Ortom after Defecting to PDP by Itumo Ndubuisi

The impeachment notice said to have been served Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue state by eight(8) members out of the thirty(30) members of the State's House of Assembly is indeed laughable and by all judgement a kangaroo move!

The impeached Speaker, Hon. Terkimbi Ikyange was said to be the ringleader of those behind this plot. Hon. Ikyange who was impeached for two solid reasons which are:His being in the minority which is tenable by all implications that a minority can never lord powers over the majority and secondly for his abysmal failure in carrying along other law makers in the Assembly's legislative business.

The impeachment took place days before Gov. Ortom defected from APC to PDP and consequent upon that a new Police Commissioner was drafted into the state leading to the denial of entry to the 22 PDP law makers into the Assembly premises last week. The barricade made them hold their plenary session in the Executive Council chambers. Just this afternoon the minority group led by Hon. Ikyange reconvened and served an impeachment notice to the executive Governor. In view of the foregoing, it's now bare that the impeachment move is very laughable and incongruous judging from the fact that the Court had before now restrained them from taking such an unrewarding action. It's also laughable as eight members against twenty two members by a simple mathematical knowledge shows that they can never form a quorum. From sources close to the Assembly, I learnt that the plenary was adjourned till August only for the eight to reconvene this afternoon for such a shameful outing. I was also intimated of the fact that the so called reconvention was done in the absence of the MACE. This actually shows that Nigerian politics is a stage composed of a lot of dramatic displays where each dramatis personae comes on stage to display; at times very hilarious act.
We are still gauging the political temperature...
